SUMMARY:The “Big Two” Of Vienna: Classical Concert: February 23-24\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:The “Big Two” of Vienna\nThe Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents The Big Two of Vienna\, performing three timeless masterpieces by Viennese composers\, Beethoven and Mozart\, February 23rd and 24th at Skyview Concert Hall. \nDETAILS\nThe orchestra shares the stage with distinguished Spanish pianist\, Ignasi Cambra. First-place recipient of several international prestigious competitions and praised by celebrated conductor Valery Gergiev\, Cambra joins the VSO in performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3\, a piece praised in its time for “a new kind of slow movement\,” long and drawn-out romantic melodies over the tinkling of piano keys. \nThe orchestra begins its 40th Anniversary Spring program with Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4\, two masterworks indicative of Viennese classical style: boisterous\, yet elegant and refined. Symphony No. 4 showcases that classical style\, a graceful composition flowing from mysterious\, lingering sections to light and quick. Composer Hector Berlioz “claimed [the second movement] was the work of the Archangel Michael\, and not that of a human” (Wiki). Music Director and world-renowned conductor Maestro Salvador Brotons returns to Skyview Concert Hall for his 28th season. \nConcert Steinway piano generously provided by Michelle’s Pianos. \nAbout Ignasi Cambra – Hailed by legendary conductor Valery Gergiev as “someone who can talk to me at the piano\,” pianist Ignasi Cambra was a Jacobs Scholar and recipient of a 2010 scholarship from Juventudes Musicales de Madrid. DESCRIPTION:VSO Goes Back To The Movies\nDETAILS\nThe Vancouver Symphony’s Chamber Music Series welcomes Rodney Sauer back to Vancouver for the showing of The Cameraman (1928) with live musical accompaniment at the historical Kiggins Theatre February 10th. The concert begins at 3 PM with a special viewing of the Laurel and Hardy short comedy\, Wrong Again\, followed by The Cameraman. SUMMARY:The VSO "Goes Back To The Movies!" With Live Musical Accompaniment: Chamber Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS\nLADY WINDERMERE’S FAN\nErnst Lubitsch was one of the greatest comedy directors from the 1910s through the 1940s. His films are infused with whimsy and witty use of off-screen space and symbolic objects\, and he always brings the audience in on the joke. \n  \nFor one of Lubitsch’s most charming silent comedies\, a play by Oscar Wilde was transformed into a silent film. It may seem impossible to adapt Wilde’s verbal wit into a non-verbal medium\, but Lubitsch rises to the task; expanding the play’s restricted timeline and settings to cinematic proportions\, and replacing verbal witicisms with visual witicisms. In fact\, only two lines from the play make it into the film. The result is a supremely subtle and well-acted comedy\, especially with Irene Rich as Mrs. Erlynne\, the woman with a mysterious past\, and Ronald Colman\, as the morally corrupt but charming Lord Darlington. \n  \nThis new score was premiered at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in December 2017\, and this is only the second performance. It is full of sparkling dance music\, and some of the finest “photoplay music” available for silent film orchestras at the time the film was first seen. \n
