Full Job Description
The Director of Development is responsible for the development, management, implementation and evaluation of an overall fundraising program consistent with the VSO’s needs and goals. In collaboration with the CEO, VSO staff and appropriate committees of the Board, the Director of Development manages and directs all annual, restricted and planned giving programs, grant applications and program management, as well as fundraising events including the annual gala. The Director works closely with the CEO on all sponsorship programs and communications to donors, patrons, sponsors and the general public.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Expand a year-round development program that encourages donor engagement, efficiently identifies major gift prospects, cultivates major gift prospects, solicits, and stewards these prospects. All efforts must demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism and ethical conduct.
- Plan, manage and implement all phases of the annual fund campaign to include solicitation, acknowledgement, gift records, and stewardship; ensure that records and policies adhere to IRS guidelines for donations.
- Expand and direct a year-round program to cultivate new and current prospects and seek out new funding opportunities from individuals, corporations and foundations with the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Identify grants, conduct grant research and implement the application process to corporations, foundations and government agencies that provide arts and arts education funding.
- Maintain records of grants, prepare summary reports and manage implementation of grant programs as necessary.
- Oversee the development and production of all materials used to support the VSO’s campaigns and fundraising events.
- Expand an ongoing planned giving program; work with the CEO and Board of Directors to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects.
- Expand and implement a corporate sponsorship program, including identification of prospects, preparation of proposals and recognition/acknowledgement with the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Develop a master fundraising calendar to outline development activities.
- Develop budgets for each event and campaign; monitor the progress of each and adjust plans as necessary.
- Work closely with the CEO, Board members and staff in long-range planning for organization; prepare budget projections as needed; and prepare an annual work plan.
- Oversee the maintenance of all donor files and records.
- Direct activities of VSO office staff as they relate to fundraising goals and programs.
- Attend all Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings to report on development activities, strategize with members, and answer questions on programs/campaigns.
- Attend VSO concerts and other events to facilitate donor stewardship.
- Develop relationships with other organizations.
- Attend civic and cultural events in the community as a representative of the VSO.
- Keep abreast of recent research in fundraising, particularly relating to arts and music; maintain current fundraising resource material; and regularly attend continuing education seminars and local conferences in fundraising.
The ideal candidate is a tenacious fundraising professional committed to growing and expanding the VSO’s development efforts. They need to be dedicated to the VSO’s mission. They are passionate about the arts and their value to the community.
The Development Director brings experience in creating a development strategy. The successful candidate has a proven background, likely derived from nonprofit work or in a closely related field in establishing systems, evaluating pipeline strength and building out strategies to reach new donor/client audiences. The ideal candidate is comfortable with high-net worth donors and successfully cultivates partnerships and relationships while providing a personal touch. An excellent communicator, the Development Director will pay attention to detail and is comfortable preparing written correspondence and communications. The new director has an appreciation of the arts and preferably has work or volunteer experience with nonprofits and has knowledge of the Vancouver/Portland area. The new Development Director must enjoy a close-knit, supportive team that collaborates to accomplish respective tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Three years of professional fundraising or related experience
- Strong writing and communications skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suit
- Experience working with CRM
- Possession of Valid Driver's license and reliable vehicle

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is seeking an energetic, technologically adept Office Assistant for a 40 hour per week position. This position will support the CEO and office team.
This person will be responsible for maintaining and organizing the office. The ideal candidate must have exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills; have a strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple tasks at once, excellent computer skills, and strong initiative.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
General responsibilities (including but not limited to): Performing a wide range of administrative and office support activities to support the efficient operation of the organization
- Answer phone calls and manage them appropriately
- General clerical duties, including:
- Managing all in and out coming mail
- Managing general VSO email inboxes
- Maintaining and organizing supply inventory
- Board Liaison
- Send board meeting and committee calendar invites
- Meal coordination for full board meetings
- Assist with all board communications
- Keep board files up to date
- Assist with on-boarding and fiscal year changes
- Data entry which includes processing of donations and ticket orders
- Manage staff calendar and work with the VSO Team to coordinate meetings & appointments
- Maintain paper and digital filing systems
- Keeping all accounts up to date with payment and information
- Music library assistance and maintain library system
- Prepare and modify documents including correspondence, donor acknowledgement letters, reports, auction requests, memos and emails
- Assist at all VSO events as needed
- Must have a vehicle and valid Driver’s License
- Additional tasks as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school education (or equivalent) required
- U.S. work authorization required
- At least one year of experience working in a professional office (or comparable)
- Experience in working for an arts organization preferred
- Self-starter who works well independently
- Familiarity with data entry/ticket sales preferred
- Familiarity with common office equipment (printers, copier, fax)
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel)
- Excellent customer service and communications skills
- Able to solve problems independently
- Professional demeanor
- The ability to lift between 25-50 pounds
COMPENSATION
- Full-time, non-exempt position
- $16 an hour
